The Florida Marlins had July 18 boldly circled on their magnetic schedules for quite some time now, and finally the “Fish” brass have officially broken ground on their upcoming 37,000-seat retractable-roof ballpark; debuting in 2012 (coincidentally the same year the world will come to an end).
“The look of this ballpark will be modern,” Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria said. “It will feel very exhilarating. We designed it to be exciting and visionary, but our highest priority of all is fan comfort. Every seat will have a terrific view, and our food will be great.”
Approximately 1,500 fans were on-hand at the groundbreaking ceremony this weekend to show support for their team’s new beginning. That’s roughly 1,373 more fans than show up at their current Land Shark Stadium for gamedays. But alas, congrats to the Florida Marlins — who will officially change to Miami Marlins after the move — and here’s hoping the new home will be as successful as the team is expecting. (assuming we avert doomsday).
