The NFL will recreate the field markings and atmosphere of the San Diego Chargers' AFL days this season with three "Legacy Games" honoring 50 years of Chargers football.

The San Diego Chargers begun play in 1960 as a member of the American Football League.  “The Bolts” spent their first season in Los Angeles, CA playing their home games in Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before moving to San Diego’s Balboa Stadium in 1961.  In 1970, the AFL-NFL merger brought the Chargers into the National Football League and this season the team has several plans to honor their rich 50-year football history.

Beginning August 1, fans will be given the opportunity to vote for the team’s greatest moment of all-time.  A panel of team experts will whittle down a list of 50 moments to their top 20, then fans will be able to vote for the single best moment in Chargers history at Brigantine Family of Restaurants locations or online.

The fans also will have a chance to select the 50 All-Time Greatest Chargers from a list of 100 names. In the program presented by Pepsi, the fans’ ballot will count 50% of the poll while a select group that includes the members of the Chargers Hall of Fame will count the other 50% of the vote. Fans will cast their votes at www.Chargers.com beginning August 1.

One other nod to the Chargers past will be a group of 3 Chargers games dubbed by the NFL as “Legacy Games:”  Monday, Sept. 14 @ Oakland Raiders (Season opener), Monday, Oct. 19 vs Denver Broncos and Sunday, Oct. 25 @ Kansas City Chiefs.

For those games, the Chargers and their original AFL opponent will wear their chosen Throwback uniform from the ‘60s. The Chargers’ Throwback uniform is identical to the uniform worn by the 1963 AFL Championship team. The games will be played with a special set of commemorative game balls and the end zones and field markings will look as they did in the early days of the upstart AFL. Other anticipated features for the team’s Legacy Game at home include special commemorative uniforms for the Charger Girls, who will dance to the music of the 60s, as well as retro uniforms worn by the game officials.
